The art of sandpainting evolved from the Navajo Religion. A sandpainting was created on the floor of the medicine man's hogan while the medicine man and the ill person chanted simultaneously. When the sandpainting was complete, the sick person would sit in the middle of the art work and the sandpainting was ritualistically destroyed, thereby destroying the evil spirit that caused the illness (hypno-therapy). The sandpainting was created and destroyed in a 12-hour period. This ritual continues today. Sandpaintings are also created by Tibetan Monks, Aborigines in the Australian "out-back", and have been discovered as far back as 300 B.C. in Japan.

XXXXXTo my knowledge, I am the only sandpainter on the west coast. I am completely self taught, I taught myself how in 1968. Also in 1981 I taught myself how to cut matts (the picture trim). Both the art work and cutting matts are separate occupations themselves!

XXXXXNow I am still the only one that does sandpaintings in Southern California. I go to art shows all over California in places like Los Altos, San Francisco, Morro Bay, Walnut Creek, Indio, Palm Springs, Studio City, San Fernando Valley, and also Nevada in places like Las Vegas and Henderson, Boulder City, Lake Tahoe, and in Arizona at Scottsdale, Carefree, Sun City West, etc. Even Lake Havasu City and other places, too.

XXXXXDue to the velvety texture of the finished product, the art medium lends itself well to Oriental art as well as animals. The sands used in my art work are either natural occurring or created by me. There is no limitation to the size of the subject matter. Paintings can be created from photograph size to 4'x6'. Anything may be painted in sand from a colored photograph or picture, making it permanent and unique.
Note: Shipping anywhere in the USA $35. Will accept Visa, MC, and AMEX. Contact artist for commissions.
